Excerpt

Interpersonal psychotherapy for depressed adolescents (IPT-A; Mufson et al. 2004a) is a time-limited, manualized psychotherapeutic intervention adapted from interpersonal psychotherapy for adults (IPT; Weissman et al. 2000). IPT is based on the principle that regardless of the underlying cause, depression occurs within an interpersonal context. The goal of treatment, therefore, is to decrease depressive symptoms by focusing on current interpersonal difficulties and helping the individual improve his or her relationships and communication patterns.
